IllustrationA short guide
Port is a fortified wine from Portugal's Douro Valley. Its styles differ in how — and how long — they are aged.
Young, deep red and fruity, aged briefly in large vats.
Aged in wooden casks until it turns amber, with notes of nuts and dried fruit.
Blends whose age on the label is an average: the older, the more mellow.
A tawny from a single harvest, with the year on the label.
Wine from one year, bottled after four to six years in wood.
From exceptional declared years, bottled young and aged for decades in the bottle.
Made from white grapes, from dry to sweet — often served with tonic.
